WESTGEN TECHNOLOGIES

ENGINEERED FOR REMOTE POWER CHALLENGES

Westgen delivers patented hybrid power and instrument air solutions that reduce fuel costs, improve reliability, and support remote operations.

OUR STORY

Westgen Technologies was founded in Calgary, Alberta in 2019 to address a gap in the power generation market: there was no reliable, cost-effective way to deliver industrial-grade power in the 1–250 kW range at remote and off-grid sites. Operators were forced into heavily oversized generators or unreliable automotive based engines — often running continuously and paired with load banks to burn off the excess — an approach that was inefficient, maintenance-heavy, and emissions-intensive.

Westgen's answer was the EPOD ("Engineered Power on Demand"), a hybrid system pairing an advanced battery array with modified industrial grade engines and the ability to integrate with solar input to deliver dependable power scaled precisely to the site. Solving that power problem unlocked a second prize: because the EPOD could reliably run an onboard air compressor, it could supply clean compressed instrument air in place of fuel gas — eliminating methane venting from pneumatic devices entirely.

The technology proved itself early. In April 2020, Shell Canada trialed a 20 kW EPOD at a six-well Duvernay pad in the McKinley/Tony Creek field near Fox Creek, Alberta, installing it alongside the incumbent design — an oversized Cummins generator (derated from 75 kW to 41 kW) running continuously against a load bank — for a direct side-by-side comparison. The EPOD delivered roughly 26% capital cost savings and more than 85% operating cost savings, while extending the generator maintenance interval from every three months to eight. On emissions, switching to instrument air eliminated methane venting worth more than 1,400 tCO₂e per year, and the EPOD's partial-duty-cycle generator emitted only about 17 tCO₂e/yr — a 93% reduction versus the base generator design — contributing to a greater-than-35% overall cut in wellpad GHG emissions. Shell went on to adopt the EPOD across all future wellpads in its Alberta Shales operations, and the delivery team earned an internal Shell Low Carbon Ambition award.

In the years since, the EPOD has become a field-proven standard operating across multiple industries in some of North America's harshest climates, from -50°C to 45°C. Collectively, EPODs in operation now eliminate over 750,000 tonnes of CO₂e in emissions every year — the equivalent of taking more than 150,000 cars off the road. Westgen continues to work on expanding geographically and adding to its product line.
